Snapshot

Josh Drummond is one of the exciting new breed of AFL footballers around whom the Brisbane Lions are looking to rebuild their club. And he's the No.1 AFL son of the Sunshine Coast. A running utility player with a thumping left foot kick he had a long, hard wait to break into AFL ranks and is a wonderful advertisement for the value of mature-age recruits. But having proved his worth at the highest level this ever-relaxed utility player is now set for a long and illustrious career as a rebounder defender, a running wingman or a dangerous half forward.

After a hot approach from rival club Carlton at the end of 2007 he was rewarded with a new three-year contract that will bind him to the Lions to the end of the 2010 season. During the 2007-08 off-season he purchased a house in Brisbane and set about turning on the long-held potential into consistent performance. He has now proven that he is one of the most important pieces of the new-look Lions team.

Season 2010

Drummond was widely tipped to be selected in the All-Australian team at the beginning of 2010, before suffering a season-ending knee injury in Round 7 at the Gabba. The Lions missed his run out of defence and many believe when he left the ground injured, the Lions' season went with him. He underwent surgery in May and was given a LARS knee reconstruction. Had the Lions made the finals Drummond was hopeful of making his return this year.

Season 2009

Had a huge off-season where he modified his running style so as to ease the press on his body in the hope of avoiding further injury problems and worked enormously hard to add considerable bulk to his frame. As the matches began he was looking set for the biggest and best year of his career, and in Round 5 posted his 50th AFL game. By mid-season was in such devastating form that he was being talked about as a possible All-Australian selection. His booming left-foot had become one of the most destructive weapons in the compettion. A couple of minor niggles late in the season took some of fthe gloss off things but still he finished 10th in the B&F despite missing playing only 20 of 24 games, and being off the ground before quarter-time in two others. Confirmed his standing as one of the game's quality players.

Season 2008

Had a largely incident-free pre-season - the best of his AFL career - and after an indifferent beginning was a standout in the NAB Challenge game against Geelong at Carrara and got better as the premiership approached. Was among the Lions' best in a narrow round 1 loss to West Coast in Perth but after a good first half in round 2 against Collingwood at the Gabba, which featured a magnificent 70m running goal, he suffered a quad strain that sidelined him until Round 8. Returned in Rounds 9-10, missed Round 11 with a minor hamstring but returned in Round 12 and has been a key figure with his long, accurate kick and relentless run from the back half. Was in stellar form in rounds 16-17, winning selection in The Courier-Mail Team of the Week, but suffered a season-ending thigh strain in the round 19 loss to Hawthorn in Launceston.
